Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was a sole child. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, she attended Temple University. She studied secondary education over the course of two years while also working. She was hoping to become an high school English teacher. However, her dream was ended when, after three years of studies and as a teachers aide she dropped out of the college. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as the work of her own. She eventually joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. In a Roots performance, she came out as an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
